Opening an Irish bank account

BOI, AIB or Revolut — what you actually need, in what order.

How it works

  1. Pick your bank

Bank of Ireland and AIB have student accounts with no fees. Revolut works instantly but some landlords and employers prefer a traditional Irish IBAN.

  2. Gather three documents

Passport, your college enrolment letter, and proof of your Irish address (tenancy agreement or a letter from your college accommodation office).

  3. Book or walk in

Student accounts can usually be opened online or in-branch. In September, book ahead — branches near campus fill up fast.

  4. Verify your identity

You'll show your passport in branch or via video call. This step is what actually activates the account.

  5. Get your IBAN and card

Your IBAN arrives immediately; the physical debit card takes 5–7 working days by post. Add it to your phone wallet on day one.
